Doctorcare247 Rebuilds App Around How Nigerians Access Healthcare Online

For many Nigerians, seeing a doctor still means a long journey, a crowded waiting room and a bill at the end of it. Doctorcare247 is seeking to make that first step as simple as opening an app, even on a patchy mobile data connection.

The Nigerian telemedicine company has relaunched its mobile application with AI-assisted patient assessment, improved performance on low-bandwidth networks and entry-level smartphones, as well as integrated health insurance options.

According to Managing Director of Doctorcare247, Chuks Chibundu, the overhaul followed years of feedback from patients and doctors using the platform.

Patients had complained that the app could slow down on mobile data and perform poorly on less powerful smartphones, while doctors wanted to spend less consultation time collecting information patients had already provided during previous visits.

One of the major changes comes before the consultation begins, with the introduction of an AI-powered pre-consultation process designed to gather patients’ symptoms and medical history in advance.

The feature is intended to reduce the need for patients to repeatedly explain their medical history, while giving doctors relevant background information before a consultation begins.

Chibundu stressed that the technology is designed to support, rather than replace, clinical judgement, with doctors remaining at the centre of the consultation while AI handles information gathering and preparation.

The application has also been re-engineered to perform better under conditions faced by many Nigerian users, including low-bandwidth internet connections and the use of entry-level smartphones.

Registration has been simplified, while patients can now retain access to their consultation history.

For healthcare professionals, the redesigned platform provides a new dashboard, pre-populated patient information, faster prescribing and streamlined referrals.

The relaunch also brings healthcare financing closer to the consultation process, with two insurance plans — **CarePlus Basic** and **CarePlus Premium** — now integrated into the application.

Patients can arrange healthcare coverage directly through the platform without having to leave the app.

The development comes amid growing interest in the role of remote healthcare and digital technology in addressing access challenges in Nigeria, where long travel times, congested hospitals and healthcare costs continue to affect access to medical services.

The possibilities for technology-driven healthcare were highlighted on September 19, 2026, when a surgical team at Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) in Ogun State performed what was described as Nigeria’s first tele-robotic surgery.

The team operated on a patient approximately 500 kilometres away at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, using a Toumai surgical robot from RoboMed Global over a Starlink connection.

“Distance should never decide who receives safe surgery; this is what safe and trusted surgery looks like,” said Professor Obi Ekwenna-Davis, who led the procedure.

The milestone also highlighted the gap betwe
