What Founders Can Learn From the Osikoya–Awolowo Partnership Behind Nigeria’s World Record Night
Two women, two companies, two disciplines, and one record that neither could have delivered alone.
On Saturday, September 26, 2026,
more than 51,000 people gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, for a
screening of the Nollywood crime thriller Black Market, setting a new
Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening in a
single location. The previous record of 43,624 was set in 2015 by the Filipino
film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.
For founders, the more instructive
story here isn’t the number. It’s the structure of the partnership that
produced it.
Two disciplines, one outcome
Damilola Osikoya, CEO of Switch Visuals, built the
commercial and operational capacity, that let 51,000 people actually experience
it. Nora Awolowo of Rixel Studios produced Black Market,
the creative product that gave the night its draw.
The lesson
Neither founder’s output was
substitutable for the other’s. That is the model worth studying: two
specialists, each excellent in a distinct discipline, whose combined work
produces an outcome larger than either company could reach alone.
What to take from it
Pair a strong creative product with
strong commercial and operational execution before scaling an idea, not after.
Treat sponsorship and
budget-building as a core discipline in its own right, not a downstream task.
Credit both sides of a partnership
publicly. It keeps the collaboration model visible, and repeatable, for the
next project.
Black Market opens in nationwide cinemas in the
coming weeks.
