 A recent study published in the Journal of Petroleum and Mining Engineering has drawn attention to the persistent challenge of severe slugging in deepwater oil production, warning that the phenomenon continues to undermine efficiency, safety, and output stability in offshore operations.

The paper, titled “An Investigation of Severe Slugging Mitigation Techniques in Deepwater Oil Field Scenario: A Review Study,” examines unstable multiphase flow conditions in subsea pipelines and how they disrupt continuous production in deepwater oil fields.

The research was co-authored by Dr. Ndubuisi N. Okereke, Christian Okalla, Uzoma Ajugwe, Charley I. Anyadiegwu, Anthony Kerunwa A.A., and Stephen G. Udeagbara.

Understanding the Problem: What is Severe Slugging?

According to the study, severe slugging remains one of the most critical flow assurance challenges in the oil and gas sector. It occurs when oil, water, and gas fail to flow uniformly through pipelines, resulting in alternating “slugs” of liquid and bursts of gas.

Instead of a steady, controlled flow, the system experiences irregular pressure surges that can destabilize production facilities. These fluctuations often lead to operational shutdowns, equipment stress, and significant production losses.

Findings and Mitigation Strategies

The study provides a detailed review of existing mitigation techniques used in offshore production systems, while also assessing emerging solutions aimed at improving flow stability in deepwater environments.

It notes that while several control methods exist, their effectiveness varies depending on field conditions, infrastructure design, and operational practices.

Expert Views

Speaking on the findings, Dr. Ndubuisi N. Okereke said the research highlights the economic importance of addressing the challenge effectively.

“The insights from the work have the potential to save over 50% of production loss,” he stated.

Also commenting on the relevance of the study, Uzoma Ajugwe stressed its significance for Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy, particularly in offshore operations in the Niger Delta region.

He explained that operational practices can sometimes worsen the problem.

“Because of Nigeria’s terrain and aging infrastructure, slugging is a multi-million-dollar problem,” he said. “In many Nigerian offshore fields, operators often open valves too wide in an attempt to meet high production quotas. Our paper provides evidence that opening the valves wider can actually reduce total production over time because it triggers slugs that eventually force the system to shut down.”

Nigeria’s Deepwater Challenge

The study further emphasizes that maintaining stable crude oil flow from reservoirs to offshore production facilities has become increasingly critical as operators seek cost-effective solutions to persistent flow assurance issues.

Nigeria, with its heavy reliance on offshore and deepwater oil production, remains particularly exposed to the operational and economic risks associated with severe slugging.

Conclusion

Researchers concluded that improved understanding of slugging dynamics, combined with the adoption of more effective mitigation strategies, could significantly enhance production efficiency, reduce equipment damage, and support more sustainable offshore operations.

The study underscores that for oil-producing countries like Nigeria, addressing flow instability is not only a technical necessity but also an economic priority.
