Rising Diesel Costs Push Nigerian Fleet Operators to Tighten Fuel Management


Persistently high diesel prices are forcing fleet operators across Nigeria to pay closer attention to fuel management, with businesses increasingly adopting monitoring technologies to reduce losses and improve operational efficiency.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average retail price of diesel climbed to ₦1,813.81 per litre in June 2025, representing a year-on-year increase of nearly 24 per cent. The upward trend has continued amid fluctuating energy costs, placing additional pressure on transport companies, logistics operators and businesses that rely heavily on diesel-powered vehicles.

Industry observers say fuel has become one of the largest operating expenses for commercial fleets, making consumption monitoring and loss prevention more important than ever.

The sustained increase in diesel prices has also renewed attention on challenges such as fuel theft, unauthorised vehicle usage and inefficient driving practices, all of which can significantly increase operating costs when left unchecked.

"As fuel becomes more expensive, every litre counts," said Adekunle Olanrewaju Emmanuel, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Otrac Telematics. "Businesses are no longer looking at fuel management simply as a way to monitor consumption. They're looking at it as part of a broader effort to improve efficiency, reduce waste and protect operating margins."

Fleet management specialists note that digital monitoring tools are increasingly being used to provide greater visibility into vehicle movements and fuel usage, enabling operators to identify unusual consumption patterns, improve route planning and strengthen operational oversight.


According to Emmanuel, technology is most valuable when organisations act on the information it provides.


"Monitoring systems can highlight unusual fuel activity or operational inefficiencies, but the real value comes from the decisions businesses make using that information," he said. "The objective isn't simply to collect data; it's to improve how fleets are managed."

Founded in 2017, Otrac Telematics provides GPS vehicle tracking, fuel monitoring, fleet telematics, driver services and vehicle compliance support across 18 cities in Nigeria. The company says more businesses are incorporating fuel management into their wider fleet optimisation strategies as operating costs continue to rise.

Analysts believe the pressure created by higher diesel prices is likely to accelerate the adoption of fleet technology across Nigeria, particularly among logistics companies and businesses seeking greater cost control in an increasingly challenging operating environment.
